It has language such as "all the identical" instead of "all the same. " It's unreadable. Unfortunately, I didn't check it until the return window passed. There are at least 6 typos in the first few pages and it makes it impossible to understand. I have nothing against the novel. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Duke's Mom -- Cheap reproduction : I try to not write negative reviews, but I was so disappointed when I received this book. It's not the story (or Agatha Christie) but the publication and publisher. I do not know the name of the publishing company as it is not printed anywhere on the book. However, upon opening it, it looked like a cheap reproduction of a verifiable publisher. The text was center aligned rather than left margin aligned, so the spacing was completely off as each and every line was centered-making for inconsistency and difficulty in reading. Also, there were extra spaces between paragraphs-as if someone just entered this into a processor without changing any of the paragraph and line spacing. The font was also very small to the end that this really was unreadable for me. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2020 )
• 1.0 out of 5 stars from Dotti -- I've read previous editions of this wonderful book twice : I've read previous editions of this wonderful book twice. This edition contains egregious typos. Bear in mind book is about man in a brown suit. In this edition, when man in the brown suit appears the editor, I assume inadvertently, substituted "suit" for "beard." If that wasn't bad enough Agatha Christie painstakingly described the man's head as "brachycephalic," a very important point as this description of the man appears several times throughout the book. This edition I purchased from Amazon, excluded that initial description completely. I'm so disgusted I don't feel like reading the rest of the book. Where can a find a respectable edition? • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Coffee Break Time -- A Great Example Of How NOT To Print Or Publish A Book! : First it has a beautiful cover, but that's about it. It printed in an extra large size; why? The typing and spacing in the book is totally wrong. It's printed as if its a poem and each line is centered on the page and doubled spaced between lines. What were they thinking. Maybe it was printed in another country by someone who doesn't understand the English language! I'm keeping it! It's a perfect example to show someone how not to print up a book or how you can really mess things up by not doing your research before sending your story out. Lastly it destroys the flow of the story because of the set-up on the page. I'm sorry to give out the bad review, but there is a sloppy line that an author shouldn't cross and the buyer shouldn't waste his/her money unless you don't care. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from john byers -- Even better than most Miss marple or Poirot : I like period mystery stories. Perry Mason, Nero Wolfe, Poirot, etc. I also like some period adventure stories. This is both. More like the Fu Manchu or Mr Moto stories. A 20 something orphaned daughter of a professor sees a man fall onto the train tracks & die & a suspicious "doctor" search his pockets & then accidentally drop a slip of paper bearing some numbers & a ship name. She decides to use her meager savings to book passage on the ship. Mystery & adventure ensue. I saw the movie many many years ago, but I'd forgot whodunnit, so I enjoyed the book. Unlike Tommy & Tuppence, or Poirot, to the best of my knowledge this is the only story Christie wrote featuring any of these characters. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2020 )

That said, the book dragged at times due to the included melodrama! BUT, it was a very relaxing book to pass the time in a busy season. Sometimes you need a complete escape and this one was good for that. Interesting characters. The best thing about Agatha Christie's work really, besides the expert writing and the interesting plots and settings, is her humor - LOVE the humor. Very English and very droll. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Intheamazone -- In Which We Meet Anne the Adventurous..... : More adventure than mystery, first published in 1924, The Man In The Brown Suit, is also a standalone novel from Christie in as much as it does not feature her famous detectives. (This was first published in The Evening Post in serialized form as Anna, The Adventurous - perhaps giving a clue as to the type of fun to follow!). A young woman, one Anne Beddingfield, arrives in London looking for just that - an adventure. She finds one. Anne is witness to the death of a man in the underground - she becomes sure that it was no accident. There follows the adventures of Anne where she travels far and wide seeking answers with just one clue in her possession. A plethora of characters come in and out of the story in various guises, often eccentric, exaggerated and verging on comedy - the adventure is spoof like, often funny, and generally good fun. Anne is something of a heroine, in the vein of a 1920s flapper, at the centre of it all. Colonel Race makes his appearance here too, to assist Anne (we do see him appear in other novels). It's all good fun and written as such. The Man in the Brown Suit is an enjoyable foray into a world of adventure and quite different in character from most of her novels, I sense that Agatha Christie may have had some fun writing it too! It begins with Anne Beddingfeld, the daughter of a professor who longs for adventure. She spends her day trying to placate creditors and longing to 'step out' with a young man. When her father dies, she takes an opportunity to go to London, where, quite by chance, she witnesses the death of a young man at a tube station. Finding a piece of paper dropped by the 'doctor' at the scene, she believes the death to be linked to that of the murder of a young woman at the house of Sir Eustace Pedlar. With only eighty five pounds to her name, her deductions ignored by the police, she boards a ship bound for South Africa. On board she meets not only Sir Eustace Pedlar but his secretary Guy Pagett, the society beauty Suzanne Blair, the enigmatic Colonel Race and the attractive Harry Rayburn. If she can find out who the man in the brown suit is, seen leaving Sir Pedlar's house shortly after the murder, she hopes for a job on the Daily Budget and life as a journalist. This is the Last Men and it is simply awful. Chapters of long drawn-out narrative with no character, dialogue or plot, but a quasi futuristic examination of society as it existed at the time Olaf Stapledon wrote this result in a boring, uninteresting, monatonic waffle about nothing.
