Dining in the Dark: A Famed Restaurant Critic's Struggle with and Triumph over Depression Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Charles Monagan -- Honest, touching, absorbing, funny : Bryan Miller has written an incisive and absorbing account of his long battle with depression while (mostly) carrying on as a hardworking journalist and head restaurant reviewer for The New York Times. Here we get all the headlines and details of Miller's illness and the effect it had on his job and tortured personal life. At several points, he sank about as low as a person can sink, yet he managed to right himself to carry on (often with the help of others). Professional that he is, he manages to tell this gruesome tale in a most entertaining way. The main course is his mental state and struggle, but the gravy includes many anecdotes about his writing career, especially while at the Times. Highly recommended. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Hunter -- Excellent book. Highly recommend. : Bryan’s honest account of his journey with depression left me with a greater understanding of the illness. Exceptionally written, Bryan highlights the ebb and flow of his depressive state and its impact on his personal and profession life. I found it challenging to do anything but read this book! Although the subject matter is serious, Bryan skillfully balanced it with humorous anecdotes and colorful accounts of his assignments/travels as the NY Times restaurant critic. The book filled my heart with empathy and at times caused me to laugh out loud - a wonderful mix of emotions. I told my brother (Richard R.) who suggested the book, “I’m enjoying it so much I don’t want it to end!” ( Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ladyvln -- humorous and honest-couldn’t put it down : It’s hard to imagine surviving such deep inner torture as this level of depression Mr Miller has experienced. It’s painfully honest and he writes with a sense of humor in spite of it all- I found it very hard to put down- I recommend it to anyone who thinks they have any idea of what another person goes through in their life- thinking others have it so easy- you never know anything about others- better to question, not judge.
