FINLAND A CENTURY AGO - AN ENGLISH AUTHOR'S SUMMER OF EXPLORATION : I loved reading this amazing book on Kindle last week - this English author wrote of her 3 month summer adventure in Finland in 1912 and Amazon has provided us with this book on Kindle for free and also the author's book on her month long adventure in Iceland, which I loved reading also. Written over a century ago describing in fascinating detail the land and its people, history, wars, government, food, Finnish baths, railroad, animals, forests, lakes, boats, exports, government, language, all prior to 1912-- I couldn't put this book down! Plenty of detail, some humor, some mystery, every page makes for an interesting read. Thanks Amazon! I wish there were more by this author besides the book on Iceland and this one - she makes these countries come "alive".

Old travel information can be great! : Mrs. Tweedie traveled years ago but her information is so charming to read. Finland is still not a common destination and she can help you understand the gap between the West and Finland. Of course some of her findings are not longer accurate but still charming and noteworthy observations.

Interesting : This was a very interesting read from both a historical angle and also as a travelogue. The author is easy to read and is very personable even with being a century old. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys travelling in person or from their armchair.

British traveller's amazing documentary of Finland in its last decades as a Russian Grand Dutchy. : I like this book for its detailed and well written description of Finland during the time of my grandparents' birth. Even though there are a lot of inaccuracies/misunderstandings of the language and customs the book's merits are great. The writer is well traveled throughout the Europe and World and compares the cultural aspects and life and nature and the landscape and people with a keen eye to relevant details.

Fun read. : Finland 100 years ago as seen through the eyes of an Englishwoman. There are some dull parts where she drifts off into her thoughts rather than facts, although it's interesting to glimpse into the psyche of an English lady of that period. The amusing anecdotes and interesting facts she writes about far outweigh the dull parts. I felt sad her sister's Kodak prints were damaged though, they would have been wonderful to see. It's free. What have you got to lose? :)

Fun in Finland : I am enjoying this - I don't know if the author intended to be amusing but reading it now 100 years after it was written, makes the author appear to be a both a woman of her time - in her expectations of dress and behavior, of herself and others, but also someone with an adventurous spirit. It is funny to see the very rational and civilized Finns presented as some strange Northern/Middle European peasant tribe, who would fit well in a fictional Dracula novel
